The Challenge of Keeping Kids Engaged in STEM: A Look at Interactive Methods

Getting kids interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is relatively easy. The real challenge is keeping them interested as they grow older and the subjects become more complex. Middle school is often the critical drop-off point where many students lose confidence, particularly in mathematics and computer science.

RAPUNSEL addressed this drop-off by using interactive, social methods that aligned with the developmental psychology of middle schoolers. At this age, peers are incredibly important, and identity construction is a major focus. By allowing kids to build their digital identity through code and share it with friends, the game tapped into their natural motivations. It made coding feel cool and socially relevant, rather than isolated and nerdy.

The project highlighted that keeping kids engaged in STEM requires moving away from static worksheets and toward interactive platforms. When students feel ownership over their learning and can share their creations with a community, they are far more likely to stick with it through the difficult stages.
