Why Traditional Computer Science Curriculums Often Alienate Underrepresented Groups

Traditional computer science education has historically favored a specific type of student: those who already have access to computers at home and are comfortable with self-guided, mechanical problem-solving. This narrow focus often alienates underrepresented groups, including young women and students from low-income backgrounds, who may not find this environment welcoming.

The RAPUNSEL project was designed specifically to counter this alienation. The research team noted that traditional computer labs often felt like boys’ clubs, dominated by students who had prior experience with gaming and tech. By introducing a game that valued collaboration, styling, and community building, the project created a space where everyone felt they belonged. It dismantled the stereotype of the lone, male programmer working in a dark room.

Creating inclusive computer science curriculums requires a conscious effort to diversify the context of programming. RAPUNSEL demonstrated that when you design software with underrepresented groups in mind, you create a richer, more diverse learning environment that benefits everyone.
