Ken Perlin and the NYU Media Research Lab: Decades of Interactive Innovations
Ken Perlin, a computer science professor at NYU and director of the Media Research Lab, played a major role in shaping the technical foundation of RAPUNSEL. Known globally for creating Perlin Noise—a mathematical technique used to generate realistic textures in computer graphics—Perlin has always been interested in making human-computer interaction feel more natural and expressive.
In the RAPUNSEL project, Perlin’s team focused on creating a system where code could control real-time character behavior smoothly. The challenge was building an interface that could translate Java code into complex character animations without lag. Under his guidance, the Media Research Lab developed tools that made coding feel organic, allowing students to feel like they were sculpting their digital world rather than writing rigid software.
