Moving Beyond Syntax: Encouraging Creative Expression in STEM for Girls

For decades, STEM education has suffered from an image problem. Many young students view fields like engineering and computer programming as cold, sterile, and devoid of creativity. This perception is particularly common among young girls, who are often socialized to value creative expression and social engagement. The RAPUNSEL project set out to change this narrative by proving that computer code can be a powerful brush for digital artists.

In the game, coding was treated as a means to an end, not the end itself. Players did not write code to calculate math equations; they coded to design custom outfits, choreograph complex dances, and create interactive items for their friends. By connecting Java syntax to creative self-expression, the software allowed girls to see themselves as creators. They realized that coding was a language they could use to express their unique identity.

This shift in perspective is essential for keeping girls interested in STEM. When computer science is taught as a creative tool, it appeals to a broader demographic. RAPUNSEL showed that if you change the way technology is framed, you can change who feels welcome in the tech industry.
