Closing the Gender Gap in Tech: Lessons Learned from the Hunter College and NYU Collaboration
The gender gap in technology is not a new problem, but the way we address it has changed over time. Decades ago, researchers noticed that girls were losing interest in computer science around middle school. To understand why and find a solution, Hunter College and New York University teamed up to build RAPUNSEL. Their goal was to create an educational game that appealed specifically to underrepresented groups in technology.
The collaborative team realized that traditional educational software often targeted young boys with themes of conflict and competition. Girls, on the other hand, often preferred collaborative environments focused on social interactions, customization, and creative expression. Instead of designing a game about shooting obstacles or racing cars, the team built a world centered on customization and social dynamics. Players used Java to design unique characters, choreograph movements, and trade scripts.
This approach proved that changing the context of computer science is key to attracting a wider audience. When coding is presented as a creative medium rather than a mechanical task, the demographic of who wants to participate changes naturally. The collaboration between Hunter College and NYU left a lasting legacy, showing that inclusive design must start at the foundational level of software engineering.
