A lel meter is a tool used by firefighters and hazmat teams to monitor the presence of flammable gases and vapors. It is also known as a Flammable Gas Detector or a Combustible Gas Analyzer and works by detecting the presence of combustible gases in air and alerting the user of dangerous conditions.

The meter measures the concentration of a specific gas in the air and displays it as a percentage of the lower explosive limit (LEL). The LEL is the lowest concentration that can combust when exposed to an ignition source such as heat or flame. Most gases have their own unique LEL which is typically listed in the meter’s operation manual.

Understanding LEL Meters: Detecting Flammable Gases Safely and Effectively

When a reading on the meter surpasses the LEL, the meter will issue an alarm which may be audible, visible or physical (vibration). A conversion chart is usually included in the meter’s operation manual to allow the user to convert the percent of LEL to its actual value in parts per million.

Using an LEL meter is vital for first responders because of the numerous news stories that have reported explosions and injuries due to fires caused by combustible gases in unventilated or restricted spaces. It allows for early detection of a leak and for proper PPE to be donned. This allows the team to evacuate quickly and reduce the risk of injury.
