Eight childhood friends came together to create a distillery that captures Detroit’s entrepreneurial spirit. They use locally sourced ingredients to produce small-batch artisanal whiskey, gin, and vodka. Visitors are welcome to sample at their tasting bar and tour the 5,000-square-foot event space that houses their historic rickhouses.

For Weiss in the Wild, Michigan Spirits has transformed itself into a jungle-themed speakeasy with branches and monkeys hanging from the ceiling and animal noises engulfing the room. Guests can sip on themed craft cocktails in tiki cups while exploring the dark room with its palm trees, vines and tropical green lighting.

The menu includes Topsy’s Revenge, which features a juicy and easy-to-sip vodka-based cocktail that tastes like a fresh, summer margarita. Weiss’ rum and absinthe are also featured, both of which have a bittersweet taste that pairs well with the fruitiness of this cocktail. The Real Macaw, served in an adorable parrot shooter, is a variation of a traditional rum runner with a cherry twist.

The distillery has also been able to get their hand sanitizer into the hands of health care institutions, municipalities, and other essential businesses by connecting with Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC). PMBC created the COVID-19 Procurement Platform to facilitate connections between PPE suppliers and organizations in need of supplies and services. PMBC has connected Weiss with several organizations that have requested hand sanitizer and they are able to distribute the product much more quickly than if they had tried on their own.
