How Do Flushable Porta Potties Work?
You see them at kids’ flushable portable toilet construction sites, music festivals, and outdoor weddings – portable toilets that address “nature’s call” conveniently and immediately. They are an integral part of any venue that wants to reduce the spread of disease-carrying bacteria by making it easy for people to wash their hands after answering “nature’s call.” Whether you need basic non-flushing porta-potties or deluxe flushable portable toilets with sinks, Westway Site Services (formerly Moore Cans) has you covered.
How Do Flushable Porta Potties Work?
All portable toilets work on a similar principle by flushing and carrying away waste, but they do not rely on the sewer system. Instead, they have a holding tank underneath the seat that holds the waste. Inside this tank are chemicals that break down solid waste, kill germs, and reduce odors, which can also help cut back on the amount of toilet paper used.
The tanks are designed to be self-contained, meaning they do not need a connection to the main water supply or sewage systems. They are also often lightweight to make transport easier. When the flushing mechanism is activated, it uses either water from a hidden water tank within the toilet or the chemicals from the holding tank to carry the waste away.
The waste will accumulate in the tank until it is nearly full. Once it reaches this point, sanitation workers will visit the toilet and insert a hose into the toilet. The hose connects to a large tanker truck that will pump the waste and liquid out for treatment and disposal. A blue dye is sometimes included in the tank to indicate when it is time for emptying. The chemicals inside are safe for the environment and people, and biocides help prevent the growth of bacteria to keep the toilet clean.
